Self-Organising Eigenspace Map (SOEM) google
This paper presents a novel time series clustering method, the self-organising eigenspace map (SOEM), based on a generalisation of the well-known self-organising feature map (SOFM). The SOEM operates on the eigenspaces of the embedded covariance structures of time series which are related directly to modes in those time series. Approximate joint diagonalisation acts as a pseudo-metric across these spaces allowing us to generalise the SOFM to a neural network with matrix input. The technique is empirically validated against three sets of experiments; univariate and multivariate time series clustering, and application to (clustered) multi-variate time series forecasting. Results indicate that the technique performs a valid topologically ordered clustering of the time series. The clustering is superior in comparison to standard benchmarks when the data is non-aligned, gives the best clustering stage for when used in forecasting, and can be used with partial/non-overlapping time series, multivariate clustering and produces a topological representation of the time series objects. …

Ocean Tensor Library google
Matrix and tensor operations form the basis of a wide range of fields and applications, and in many cases constitute a substantial part of the overall computational complexity. The ability of general-purpose GPUs to speed up many of these operations and enable others has resulted in a widespread adaptation of these devices. In order for tensor operations to take full advantage of the computational power, specialized software is required, and currently there exist several packages (predominantly in the area of deep learning) that incorporate tensor operations on both CPU and GPU. Nevertheless, a stand-alone framework that supports general tensor operations is still missing. In this paper we fill this gap and propose the Ocean Tensor Library: a modular tensor-support package that is designed to serve as a foundational layer for applications that require dense tensor operations on a variety of device types. The API is carefully designed to be powerful, extensible, and at the same time easy to use. The package is available as open source. …

Success of a Data Analysis google
A fundamental problem in the practice and teaching of data science is how to evaluate the quality of a given data analysis, which is different than the evaluation of the science or question underlying the data analysis. Previously, we defined a set of principles for describing data analyses that can be used to create a data analysis and to characterize the variation between data analyses. Here, we introduce a metric of quality evaluation that we call the success of a data analysis, which is different than other potential metrics such as completeness, validity, or honesty. We define a successful data analysis as the matching of principles between the analyst and the audience on which the analysis is developed. In this paper, we propose a statistical model and general framework for evaluating the success of a data analysis. We argue that this framework can be used as a guide for practicing data scientists and students in data science courses for how to build a successful data analysis. …

PSB_PG google
Many real-world networks known as attributed networks contain two types of information: topology information and node attributes. It is a challenging task on how to use these two types of information to explore structural regularities. In this paper, by characterizing potential relationship between link communities and node attributes, a principled statistical model named PSB_PG that generates link topology and node attributes is proposed. This model for generating links is based on the stochastic blockmodels following a Poisson distribution. Therefore, it is capable of detecting a wide range of network structures including community structures, bipartite structures and other mixture structures. The model for generating node attributes assumes that node attributes are high dimensional and sparse and also follow a Poisson distribution. This makes the model be uniform and the model parameters can be directly estimated by expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. Experimental results on artificial networks and real networks containing various structures have shown that the proposed model PSB_PG is not only competitive with the state-of-the-art models, but also provides good semantic interpretation for each community via the learned relationship between the community and its related attributes. …
